My name is Tom Hufford, AKA "Huffy the Firefighter Clown" President of "Huffy and Friends" the Tulsa Firefighters' Educational Clowns. We are a non-profit organization put together by off duty Tulsa Firefighters and many other volunteers in 1984. We are non-profit group funded only through private and corporate donations, and fundraisers.

Our main goal is to teach life and fire safety education in 8 major safety topic areas to as many children, parents, and seniors as possible to prevent injuries and deaths with the volunteer hours, donated funds, and materials that we can generate. By doing this we can help cut down or eliminate the terrible affects that come with preventable injuries and fire. We see thousands of people a year during our efforts. We volunteer our time, but we must turn to the community for financial support, and for material donations for the safety videos, safety coloring books, stage show safety programs, safety event booths, web site, and many other projects that we provide free to the community. We have many awards to show that we mean business.

In other countries fires, injuries and deaths are looked at as a failure of the fire prevention and safety education efforts. Injuries and deaths are a failure to educate and train our community about the dangers that we face each day. Unfortunately here in the U.S. the mindset is that these terrible events are accidents or unpreventable acts that just happens. We should just react to it after the fact. This is just not true! A lot of these incidents can be prevented! We are trying to change this old way of thinking. Education is the key to preventing fires, injuries, and for saving lives and property.

The three main causes of preventable injuries, deaths, and fires are men, women, and children. Most of these type of incidents can be prevented with proper education and preventative actions. When we (as Tulsa Firefighters) respond to an incident involving a burned person or a person in any of the top eight preventable injury areas, ( especially a child ) we have an emptiness feeling inside, why did this happen? Our way to battle this is to do as much as possible to educate the community to help prevent future incidents.

We are making a difference!

  • To relay Preventable Injury and Death Safety Education to as many people that we can with the volunteers, sponsorship, and resources that we can generate. Furthermore we partner with safety organizations like Tulsa Safe Kids, local fire departments, The Fire Marshal's Association of Oklahoma, Tulsa Akdar Shrine organization, American Red Cross, the Tulsa Police Department, and over a hundred Schools and Education Facilities in Oklahoma, U.S.A..

  • We promote Community Safety Education through Huffy the Safety Clown & Firefighter Tom's Magic Safety Shows, our Huge Web Site, Children's Safety Coloring Books, Adult Safety Brochures, Tulsa Metro Hottest Firefighter Calendars, Media Friends, and Event Safety Booths. We have three storage facilities for our trailers, safety boat, props, special events equipment, and safety booth handout materials.

  • We have a Free Safety Video Program where we film and produce our own safety message videos. We provide DVDs for free to all teaching facilities. They are also aired on Tulsa Cox Cable TV through the Tulsa Public Schools Cable Channel 20, along with the Kid/Teen TV show. We have a video called "Stop Drop and Roll with Huffy the Clown" free at all Tulsa County Libraries. We have new Safety Videos & PowerPoints coming on line every year. We are breaking local and national records in public safety education.

  • The cost for all this is around $30,000.00 annually and growing.

FYI: We put on Oklahoma's only camp for burn survivors called Oklahoma Firefighter's Burn Camp for ten years from 1999 to 2008. We also sponsored an apartment for Burn Victim's Families for 24 years from 1984 to 2008. These two programs now have their own non-profit number and are separate from our organization, although we still partner with them.

If you, your company, or organization would like to help us with any of our projects we would greatly appreciate it. We have a TFEC PowerPoint presentation CD, a TFEC Organization Slide Show D.V.D., a donation "Wish List," a huge web site, and would love to talk to you in person!
